Bamboo train in Battambang
Battambang isn’t the most popular destination for travelers in Cambodia, but those who do make it to this north-western part of the country know all about the memorable bamboo train.
Crystal Holidays Travel will take you on an adventure, transferring you from Siem Reap to Battambang in a private air-conditioned car for your bamboo train ride.
In the old days, this rail track was used to transport goods between Battambang and Phnom Penh and was a typical mode of transport for farmers and villagers. Today, it’s a historical and fun-filled ride through beautiful countryside before arriving in a small village. Along the way, you will get a chance to stop at various attractions such as Wat Banan Temple and the Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau.
The bamboo train itself is a creative form of local transportation. Consisting of a small motorcycle engine-powered bamboo plank that rides the railroad tracks, the train picks up and drops off passengers, cargo, animals, and even motorcycles along the way. When it meets an on-coming bamboo train, it can be disassembled and taken off the rails in a minute or two, allowing the other to pass. Cambodia is currently in the process of upgrading its rail system. When the Battambang tracks are replaced, the Bamboo Train will likely come to an end. If you ever wanted to ride the bamboo train, it’s now or never.
